Online Course Offerings
Hanover County Public Schools provides a variety of educational opportunities for students during the summer. The purpose of summer school is to enrich the education of students and to permit students to earn credits needed for graduation or promotion. Summer school courses and programs are for Hanover residents only. Regardless of provider, HCPS students can only take one course during the summer.
Current summer school offerings include:

Note: If a student takes the online course for Health/PE 10, the student would need to take on the responsibility, both personally and financially, to take drivers education, as it will not be part of the summer school online curriculum. Hanover County Public Schools will not offer a standalone driver’s education course outside of the Health/PE 10 course offering. |
Virtual Virginia
Students who want to take other courses are encouraged to visit the Virtual Virginia website (https://virtualvirginia.org/) and review summer course offerings. Your school counselor will assist with the registration process if interested. Again, regardless of provider, HCPS students can only take one course during the summer.
Online Course Considerations
With help from your school counselor and your parent(s), students should consider the following questions:
- Am I self-motivated and disciplined?
Students should be prepared to devote as much time to the online course as would be expected in a face-to-face course (three to five hours per day).
- Am I able to learn successfully through written or visual material instead of having direct communication with an instructor?
- Am I able to self-advocate and troubleshoot in order to meet my academic and technological needs?
- Do I have consistent access to the internet?
As an online summer school student, it is the family's responsibility to have access to reliable, high-speed internet to be successful. A Chromebook will be provided by HCPS.
Tuition
- Registration must be completed online. No registrations will be accepted after the closing date of both online.
- The cost of online summer school is $400 per course.
- Students may enroll in only one course.
- The preferred payment method is Online School Payment (OSP). Directions for payment will be emailed after counselor approval of course request. Parents may also pay by check or cash.
Attendance
Online learning students are required to attend the mandatory virtual meetings for orientation, weekly support, and any scheduled exams. Additionally, students should expect to be working in their course daily through the week.
