Licensure

In order to be hired as a teacher in Hanover County Public Schools, candidates must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License in the appropriate teaching area.

Hanover County Public Schools is fortunate to have numerous applicants for a limited amount of teaching positions, especially in certain grades or subjects. Therefore, the more preparation a candidate has completed for full licensure (and/or successful field or working experience), the greater their chances of securing a teaching position with HCPS.

Teachers who hold an out of state teaching license (full credentials, without deficiencies) are encouraged to submit an application directly to the Virginia Department of Education. Other individuals who do not hold such a license must have a job offer and the support of the school district in order to apply for a provisional or technical professional license, as the full license is preferred.
