HCPS Online Learning offers broadened opportunities for any HCPS student or educator to access quality online learning experiences that are relevant to their interests, needs, and personal goals beyond the traditional classroom. We strive to prepare learners to live, learn, and work in a global community.

Approved Instructional Resources
HCPS uses Schoology as its learning management system. When needed, Hanover uses resources provided through Virtual Virginia to support instruction in specialized courses. Opportunities for credit recovery are offered via Edmentum
Online Course Options
Edmentum
Edmentum offers students to recover content or an entire credit through their online learning platform at no cost to the student.
- Content Recovery: For students who fail a marking period and need to recover only part of a course. Students can earn a maximum passing grade of 65% (D) for the recovered portion and receive credit toward graduation.
- Credit Recovery: For students who completed a full course but failed. Students can earn a maximum passing grade of 65% (D) for the course allowing them to receive credit toward graduation.
- Initial Credit: In rare cases and with approval from the student’s counselor and HCPS Instructional Leadership, students may use Edmentum to complete courses for initial credit. These courses earn credit toward graduation.
Virtual Virginia
With approval from their school counselor and HCPS Instructional Leadership, students may enroll in Virtual Virginia courses, which expand access to:
- Advanced Placement courses not offered locally
- American Sign Language
- Specialized electives and other courses not offered locally due to low enrollment or staffing
HCPS covers Virtual Virginia course costs during the regular school year. These courses earn high school credit and count toward graduation.
Summer School
Hanover County Public Schools offers online summer school for high school students needing the following courses:
- English 9, English 10, English 11, English 12
- Economics & Personal Finance
- Virginia & U.S. Government
- Algebra 1, Geometry
- Health/PE 9, Health/PE 10
HCPS Summer School courses are $400 and earn credit toward graduation.
Students may also take summer courses through Virtual Virginia. Virtual Virginia Courses are $375 and also count towards graduation. Please visit virtualvirginia.org for their full list of offerings.
Students may take only one summer course, whether through HCPS Summer School or Virtual Virginia. Those interested must obtain approval from their school counselor.
