Licensure Renewal

The commitment to continuous learning is important, and the renewal process ensures that school personnel continually update their professional knowledge and skills. Teaching licenses may be renewed upon the completion of a total of 270 professional development points. Please refer to the Virginia Department of Education Teacher Licensure Renewal Manual (10-year license). You must earn these points during the validity period of your license and list them on an Individualized Renewal Record (IRR), also available on the same link.

It is advised that you consult with your principal or advisor annually, or until all 270 points have been accrued, to review, verify, and sign your IRR form.

Please note: Provisional licenses are not renewable – requirements must be completed by the expiration date on the Provisional license.

Renewal Procedure:

  • Download the application, it is the last three pages of the manual. You should type all information into the application (pages 26–28) and then print only those three pages. Do not download/print the document until December (VDOE could update it). Applications will not be accepted in HR until after December 15.

  • Always use your license number on forms - not your social security number. You can find this number if you create a VALO account on VDOE's website. VALO User Guide

  • Remember, statutory requirements are required to be completed again to stay up-to-date. Use this link to find the training modules for renewal.

  • Review the document for accuracy, ensure that it is complete, then sign/date by hand (scanned/emailed copies will not be accepted).
  • Attach paper copies of all statutory requirement certificates (they must have your name and the date completed TYPED into the certificate). Remember - these must be dated within 10 years of your expiration date. The CPR certificate must not be expired.
  • Confirm that you have requested official transcripts for all coursework and send toPaul Van Auken, Human Resources.
  • Have your supervisor (or the school's designee) sign and date, confirming that you have completed the required 270 points of PD.
  • Send your complete application packet to Paul Van Auken at the School Board Office via the pony (interoffice mail) to arrive no later than Friday, March 15.
Information and Tips:
  • Points: Five-year renewable license holders must present 180 points for renewal and will be issued a 10-year renewable license. This applies to licenses expiring in 2025. License holders are only required to verify 180 points, additional points earned do not need to be included or verified with evidence for the license renewal process. Your renewed license will be effective for 10 years.
  • Points: Ten-year renewable license holders will need to present 270 points for license renewal
  • Points: For resources to gain points, check out the HCPS HR Hub.
  • Points: An approved 3-semester hour college course counts for 90 points
  • Common Mistake: If you are employed by a school division, your packet must be sent by that school division.
  • Common Mistake: The $50 check needs to be made payable to the Treasurer of Virginia
It is the responsibility of the license holder to maintain a valid license issued by the Virginia Department of Education. Progress should be made each year towards license renewal requirements and reflected on the performance evaluation process accordingly. Non-compliance of license renewal requirements and deadlines may result in a recommendation for non-renewal of the contract or dismissal from a position.
