Visual Arts

Teacher showing artTo engage students in creative and critical thinking through hands-on instruction.

We believe that art is:

  • the universal language of visual communication and that art refines perceptual skills;
  • form, content, and context;
  • a discipline which requires reflection and revisiting of concepts;
  • an on-going process for life-long learning;
  • essential for all students.

Instructional Approach

Visual Arts educators develop experiences for students which incorporate critical thinking and communication skills, allow for innovative approaches not only in the use of technology, but also in making connections to the world of art.  Educators also help students develop skills in a variety of art techniques and processes. At the core of the art-making experience is the creative process which guides the development of ideas and creative work. Students are encouraged to share ideas and reflect on their own art-making as part of the studio experience.

Our Fine Arts courses are exploratory in nature, and students experience a range of media, techniques, and processes during an art course. We also offer specialized courses in darkroom photography and graphic arts.

Approved Instructional Resources

Students enrolled in Graphic Arts courses at the high school have access to the Adobe Creative Cloud. The license structure allows for access to the software on desktops in the graphics lab.

Photography courses are darkroom-based with some digital photography experience determined by the photography teachers. Students will need access to a 35mm film camera for photography courses. For more information about specific courses needs, contact the photography teacher at your student’s high school.

Art teachers curate instructional resources to suit specific art units. Online resources are reviewed and vetted by art educators before use with classes. In addition, teachers may use print materials and posters with classes as teaching aids or for inspiration.
