What are the benefits to taking AP courses?

AP Courses give students the opportunity to take college level courses to prepare them for the rigors of college. It sets students up to graduate college in four years or less, so money in saved!

When is the earliest I can enroll in an AP course?

Sophomore year is the earliest you can take an AP course. Please see the "Sample Schedule" for more details on which courses are available. 

Are there any limitations to being able to take an AP course? 

Any student is able to enroll in an AP course, as long as they have met the necessary prerequisites (please refer to the Program of Studies). 

Are you required to take the AP exam if you take the AP class? 

Taking the test is not required but is highly recommended for earning college credit. 

What does an AP exam entail? 

AP exams are administered in May (on-site and off-site). For the 2024-25 year, the cost is $99 per exam and is the responsibility of the student. The exams are approximately 3-4 hours long. They are composed of multiple-choice and free response questions. The scores are posted online in July. 

Are all the same AP courses offered at each high school in Hanover County?

Courses are created based on interest at each school, as well as teacher availability. Therefore, course offerings may differ from school to school. It is not guaranteed that an AP course will be offered each year. View the Sample AP Schedule.

When is the earliest I can enroll in an AP course?

AP Human Geography is available for students in grades 9-12. Freshmen who are self-motivated, possess a strong work ethic, demonstrate effective time management skills, and have a curiosity about Human Geography are encouraged to consider this course.
