Quick Tips and FAQs About SPED

Child Find

Child Find is the process that local school divisions must use to identify, locate, and evaluate children in the district who are between the ages of birth to 21 who are in need of special education and related services. If you suspect that your child/student might require special education services, please follow the guidelines below.

  • For children who are already in school: If you suspect that your student who is already enrolled in school (preschool to grade 12) has a disability that might require special education services, contact the Administrator of Special Education (ASE) at your child’s home school. In elementary schools in Hanover, that is the assistant principal. In middle and high schools in Hanover County, the secondary special education senior teacher is the ASE.
  • For children ages 35: If you suspect that your child might have a disability, or if you are concerned that your child is not meeting developmental milestones, please contact the Administrator of Special Education (the assistant principal) at the neighborhood school where your child will register to attend kindergarten.
  • For children ages birth to 3: If you suspect that your child might have a disability, or if you are concerned that your child is not meeting developmental milestones, please contact the Hanover County Early Intervention Program (Infant & Toddler Connection/ITCH) at (804) 365-3330.
If you have any additional questions about the Child Find process, please contact the Hanover Parent Teacher Resource Center at (8040 365-4596 or [email protected].
