Meagan Forster and her daughtersMeagan Forster, the school nurse at Atlee High School (AHS), has been selected as the 2020-21 Hanover County Public Schools Support Employee of the Year. Forster, a school nurse for 13 years, is in her fourth year with HCPS.

“I come to school each day with the same goal in mind – keep my staff and students healthy and safe,” Forster said. “By receiving this award, I feel my goal is being met, and my Atlee Raiders appreciate me! This year, COVID-19 challenged each school nurse in Hanover County to work harder than ever before. This recognition lets me know that our school division understands and appreciates the work nurses are putting in this year.”

Forster attended Bon Secours Memorial School of Nursing before receiving her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her favorite part of the job, she said, is being there for her students.

“Some school days require emergency care to be given, and other days students just need someone to hear about their latest achievement,” she said. “I love being able to help them through any physical and mental challenges so they can be in class learning to be successful.”

Dr. Michael Gill, Superintendent of Schools, made the surprise announcement – with a little special help from Forster’s daughters – on Thursday, May 6 during a staff meeting at Atlee High School.

Health Services Coordinator Terry Woody said Forster is “very deserving” of the honor.“Her dedication and hard work has greatly contributed to our success this school year during the pandemic,” Woody said. “She has gone above and beyond to assure that our school community is healthy and safe. Her work ethic and professionalism has been inspiring to all of us.”

Dr. John Wheeler, AHS Principal, said the school is ecstatic to have Mrs. Forster honored.

“She provides unique and exceptional services to our students and staff and has a gentle and calm demeanor that renders her effective in every situation while demonstrating a commitment to excellence to our school and her craft on a daily basis,” Wheeler said. “She is always willing to help or listen, not easily rattled, and a mentor to many Raiders. She has been an invaluable asset to our school during the COVID-19 pandemic, is a true servant to our school community, and most worthy of this honor.”

The school division employs over 1,000 support employees in order to accomplish its mission. Each year, one employee wins this distinguished award. It is given to an employee who exhibits several qualities, such as: provides unique and exceptional contributions to the school division; demonstrates commitment through quality job performance and a positive attitude; demonstrates leadership; seeks to enhance their skills and knowledge; and, fosters cooperation and positive relationships with colleagues, students, teachers, administrators, and the school community.
