Hanover County Public Schools (HCPS) has earned the status as a top employer for military veterans in Virginia, receiving certification from the Virginia Values Veterans (V3) program.
V3, an official program from the Commonwealth of Virginia, helps employers implement nationally recognized best practices in recruiting, hiring, and retaining highly-skilled and dependable veterans. HCPS Human Resources staff participated in the required V3 training this spring to achieve the certification.
“We are committed to doing everything possible to providing our veterans with opportunities that allow them to continue to serve our country – pouring directly into the next generation of leaders and servants,” said Dr. Michael Gill, Superintendent of Schools. “To the veterans who are already serving our schools, we thank you for your service and for continuing to make a difference in the lives of our students. To the veterans who are considering becoming a teacher, bus driver, or one of our many other vital roles, we thank you for your service and encourage you to join our dedicated public education staff. You are welcome, valued, and very much wanted here.”
As a V3-certified organization, HCPS will work with the Virginia Department of Veterans Services and other strategic partners to support Virginia’s veterans, something the school division has a long history of doing.
In 2023, for example, Cold Harbor Elementary School Principal Mrs. Allison Mullens received the Patriot Award from the U.S. Department of Defense for her extensive support of Master Sergeant Tony Relyea, a fifth grade teacher at the school, and his service in the Army Reserve. Additionally, Patrick Henry High School has twice received the Purple Star Designation Award from the Virginia Department of Education’s Military Student Support Process Action Team and the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on the Educational Opportunity of Military Children, recognizing their military-friendly practices and a commitment to military students and families.

Col. (Retired) Bob May of the South Anna District. “Their leadership and life experiences enrich our school communities, inspiring both staff and students alike. We are proud to have earned this certification and will use this as a reaffirmation of our commitment to those who have selflessly served our country.”
