Dear Families,
We hope you are well. We are writing to share with you important information regarding the forecasted inclement weather.
We are closely monitoring the forecasted inclement weather that is approaching Hanover County this weekend and any impact it may have. At this time, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Virginia, including Hanover County, from Saturday afternoon through Monday afternoon.
As always, we will communicate any closings or delays that may be necessary as quickly as possible.
School Calendar and Next Week’s Plan
As
we shared with you last month, the school calendar includes banked instructional time (meaning a makeup day is not required) should inclement weather lead to the closure of school. The adopted 2025-26 school calendar includes two banked days and three designated makeup days. The December 5 and December 8-10 closures constituted both the banked days and two of the three makeup days (January 12 and February 16).
To ensure we meet state requirements, our team has carefully reviewed the school calendar and created an instructional plan for any future inclement weather days that may result in a closure. While, again, no decisions have been made regarding this weekend’s forecasted inclement weather, please note our plans below to assist your family in the event of significant inclement weather and school closures next week. We are sharing this information with you now to allow your family time to prepare should inclement weather necessitate extended school closures.
- Monday, January 26 would make Friday, March 20 (the third designated makeup day in the 2025-26 school calendar) a full instructional day across the school division.
- Tuesday, January 27 would be a Remote Learning Day. Middle and high school students would access B Day lessons to work on independently in Schoology. Elementary school students would complete activities that do not require a computer and would be shared via ParentSquare by your student’s teacher. More information on Remote Learning Days is below.
- Wednesday, January 28 would not require an adjustment to the school calendar. If needed, students could use this day to complete assignments from the Tuesday Remote Learning Day.
- Thursday, January 29 would be a Remote Learning Day. Middle and high school students would access A Day lessons to work on independently in Schoology. Elementary school students would complete activities that do not require a computer and would be shared via ParentSquare by your student’s teacher. More information on Remote Learning Days is below.
- Friday, January 30 would not require an adjustment to the school calendar. If needed, students could use this day to complete assignments from the Thursday Remote Learning Day.
- The most up-to-date chart showing the specific impact of inclement weather days and the plan for any future closures can be found
here.
As always, we plan to assess our facilities, road and travel conditions, and overall weather conditions each day to make decisions in the best interest of our students, staff, families, and community. Again, we are sharing this information with you now to allow your family time to prepare should inclement weather necessitate extended school closures.
Remote Learning Days
Our team has worked diligently to develop a remote learning plan that will provide students with the opportunity to continue their education from home, ensuring instructional time is not lost due to extended weather-related disruptions. This would avoid extended school days, the loss of Spring Break, or Saturday makeup sessions.
With specific regard to Remote Learning Days,
please note that flexibility is key. We ask that you please practice the same patience, grace, and kindness that helped us successfully navigate recent school years. We recognize the impact a Remote Learning Day may bring to your family and greatly appreciate your adaptability to help ensure that our students receive instruction and support.
Should a Remote Learning Day be necessary, all families would receive a ParentSquare notification from each of your child's teachers. This message would include information about how students can access their assignments for the day and how to contact the teacher if your child needs assistance.
Elementary school families, please also note that Remote Learning Day work would be turned into your student’s classroom teacher once schools reopen to count as participation for the day.
Our dedicated team of faculty and staff have already begun preparing for this possibility. Should remote learning be necessary, please know that the same spirit of care and support that your student experiences every day at school would be extended virtually as well.
