Inclement Weather Update: Feb. 3, 2026

Dear Families, Faculty, and Staff,
We hope you are warm and well. Unfortunately, the lingering impacts of recent inclement weather and the ongoing below freezing temperatures continue to create hazardous conditions. While some melting is occurring, conditions on secondary roads, especially in neighborhoods, continue to remain unsafe for our buses, student drivers, staff, and families. Several examples of these road conditions documented by our Transportation Department today can be found in
this folder. We know our partners at the Virginia Department of Transportation are working as quickly as possible to clear these areas.
Additionally, please note that our contractors are hard at work clearing our facilities and are making progress. Still, the below freezing overnight temperatures are limiting melting and remain a challenge to our ongoing efforts. We do not anticipate substantive improvement in conditions before Thursday.
As a result,
HCPS will be CLOSED on Wednesday, February 4 AND Thursday, February 5. Tomorrow (Wednesday) will be a Remote Learning Day (more information below). Employees use Code 2 for both days, meaning all 12-month employees report to work two hours late.
All other employees work remotely as able.
Wednesday will be a Remote Learning Day across the school division as part of our inclement weather instructional plan that we shared with you last week. As a reminder, please note the following with regard to the Remote Learning Day:
-
All families will receive a ParentSquare message from your student’s teacher(s). This message will include information about how students can access their assignments for the day and how to contact the teacher if your child needs assistance.
-
Elementary school students will complete activities that do not require a computer and will be shared via ParentSquare by your student’s teacher. This work will be turned into your student’s classroom teacher once schools reopen to count as participation for the day.
-
Middle and high school students will access
A Day lessons to work on independently in Schoology.
-
Flexibility is key. We ask that you please practice the same patience, grace, and kindness that helped us successfully navigate recent school years. We recognize the impact a Remote Learning Day may bring to your family and greatly appreciate your adaptability to help ensure that our students receive instruction and support.
- The most up-to-date chart showing the specific impact of inclement weather days and the plan for any future closures can be found
here.
Please note that
all after-school activities and events are canceled for Wednesday, February 4 AND Thursday, February 5.
Please be assured that
our goal remains to get our students and staff back to school as safely and quickly as possible, recognizing the impact of extended closures on our community. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this difficult and unusual situation.
We hope that sharing this information well in advance is helpful to you as you begin to make the necessary arrangements. We will communicate any further delays or closures that may be necessary as quickly as possible.
As always, we appreciate your support. Thank you.
Stay safe and warm,
Hanover County Public Schools
