The Hanover County School Board has approved new names for the schools formerly known as Lee-Davis High School and Stonewall Jackson Middle School.

At its meeting Tuesday night, the board voted in favor of Mechanicsville for the high school and Bell Creek for the middle school. The board previously signaled support for the names at its planning retreat last month, where it also voiced its appreciation for the input it received from families, staff, and the broader community, as well as the work of the School Renaming Committee.

The new names are in line with School Board policy, which stipulates that schools cannot be named after any person, living or deceased.

New mascots will now be chosen for the two schools. That is a school-based decision and more information about the mascot selection process will be shared soon.
