Four Hanover County Public Schools teachers have received the 2020 R.E.B. Awards for Teaching Excellence, recognizing them as outstanding teachers who demonstrate a sincere passion for teaching while also serving as mentors, coaches, and champions for their students.

The Community Foundation and the R.E.B. Foundation honored winners of the distinguished award on Wednesday. Dr. Michael Gill, Superintendent of Schools, announced each winner at their school during faculty meetings. Combined, the four teachers will receive cash grants of $43,800 to travel the world to continue their own learning and bring it back to the classroom.

Nominated by students, parents, and colleagues, the Hanover educators are among 18 winners from across the Richmond region chosen by the Community Foundation and the R.E.B. Foundation as being considered among the best in their field.

The 2020 R.E.B. Awards for Teaching Excellence Award recipients from Hanover County Public Schools are:

Lisa Cocke (Liberty Middle School): $9,400

Matthew Gray (Atlee High School): $11,100

“Teachers are at the heart of our mission, and I applaud the extraordinary efforts of these four teachers on their nomination for this prestigious award.  Their passion for and commitment to educating students represents the very best of Hanover County Public Schools,” said Dr. Gill.  “The unique experiences made possible these grants will enable them to provide even greater learning opportunities for our students.”

A fifth Hanover teacher, Amelia Buchanan of Chickahominy Middle School, was chosen as a finalist and will receive a $750 unrestricted cash grant in recognition of her achievements in the classroom.

The awards program, which is a partnership between the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond and the R.E.B. Foundation, recognizes excellence in public education by awarding cash grants to outstanding public school teachers from the City of Richmond, the counties of Chesterfield, Henrico, and Hanover, and the Department of Correctional Education. Since its inception in 1988, the program has awarded approximately $4.2 million to over 950 public school instructors as recognition for their outstanding classroom performance.
