Washington-Henry Elementary School Replacement
Hanover County Public Schools is proud to be replacing Washington-Henry Elementary School with a new school building that is scheduled to open for the 2027-28 school year.
Timeline To Date
- May 2018: At a Hanover County School Board work session, Board members learned through the results of a study requested by the Board that Washington-Henry Elementary School is in need of replacement.
- September 2018: The School Board reaches consensus to prioritize the replacement of WHES among other projects identified in the study.
- January 2023: The Capital Improvement Plan advances the schedule for the replacement of WHES from FY2027 to FY2025 to allow for initiation of the design process of the school.
- May 2023: The Capital Improvement Plan adopted by the Hanover County School Board includes the proposed schedule advancement.
- January 2024: The Capital Improvement Plan includes funding for the replacement of WHES in the FY2025 budget.
- May 2024: The Capital Improvement Plan adopted by the Hanover County School Board includes funding for school replacement in the FY2025 budget.
Community Meetings
As part of the process for replacing the school building, HCPS and Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates, the architectural firm that is overseeing the replacement of the school, is seeking input through a series of meetings with students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. The community meetings will be held as follows:
- Student Focus Group: Wednesday, October 23
- Faculty and Staff: Wednesday, October 23
- Community: Tuesday, October 29 at 6 p.m. at WHES (following the Book Fair)
- Community: Monday, November 18 at 6:30 p.m. (Virtual); more information on this meeting will be shared in the near future.
