As Generative AI tools become increasingly accessible, we must understand their appropriate and responsible use. Our division and school leaders are engaging in collaborative learning and gathering input from stakeholders to determine the suitable application of Generative AI for students and staff in our schools.

This website marks HCPS’ ongoing efforts to empower our educators, students, and families with the knowledge and skills to harness the potential of Generative Artificial Intelligence responsibly and innovatively.

What is AI? How do you use it? What are the considerations?

Generative AI Guidelines: At A Glance

Digital Literacy

Educators, students, and families should learn how to use Generative AI tools responsibly, set clear expectations for their use, and address plagiarism or misuse according to the HCPS Code of Conduct.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools predict likely responses but can produce false information ("hallucinations") and often lack transparency about sources. Always verify the accuracy and credibility of AI-generated content.

Many AI tools collect and share user data with third parties and may have age restrictions. HCPS blocks tools that fail to meet legal and safety standards.

Hanover's iBoss filter ensures compliance with laws and policies by vetting and controlling access to digital resources, including AI tools, for appropriate use.

Schools, educators, and families should work together to promote informed, ethical, and responsible use of AI as guidelines and technology continue to evolve.

Responsible Use Guidelines

Protect Privacy & Follow Policy - Never share student Personally Identifiable Information (PII)  or educational records with Generative AI tools. Always adhere to HCPS’ Acceptable Use Policy and review terms and privacy policies before using digital resources.

Promote Responsible Use - Educate, model, and supervise appropriate use of devices, networks, and AI tools. Guide students to approved resources available on their Classlink dashboards.

Verify Accuracy & Credibility - Double-check AI-generated content for accuracy, bias, and relevance, ensuring it aligns with your intended goals. Treat AI-generated information as you would any other source - critically and cautiously.

Credit and Transparency - Always give credit for others' work where appropriate and ensure students report the percentage of AI-generated content in their assignments.

Respect Age Guidelines - Ensure AI tools are age-appropriate and suitable for educational use by consulting their terms of service or restrictions.
