How do I request a Mi-Fi device? 

If you do not have reliable internet service at your home, you may submit a Mi-Fi Device Request form. The Mi-Fi devices are intended to be used for filtered internet access for the educational use by students enrolled in Hanover County Public Schools. Please note that your request for a Mi-Fi device does not guarantee that we will be able to provide one. Device distribution will be prioritized based upon need and subject to availability of devices. The devices do not ensure connectivity and we acknowledge that these devices do not work in some areas.

What internet speed is sufficient for virtual learning? Will my hotspot work?

There are many factors that impact the internet speed associated with cellular hotspots and DLS links. For the purpose of virtual learning, HCPS is utilizing the specifications set forth by the State of Virginia’s Broadband Taskforce. For successful virtual learning, the minimum speed recommended is 25Mbps download/ 3 Mbps upload. Parents/students can test their internet speed by running a series capacity tests.

Will HCPS provide laptops for home use?

Middle school devices were scheduled for distribution in the 2020-2021 school year. Unfortunately, the vendor has communicated with HCPS that there is a severe delivery delay due to the impact of COVID-19 on the supply chain. On June 24 the Board of Supervisors approved the allocation of CARES funding for the purchase of devices for grades 3-5 and high school. This purchase is subject to the same supply delays. At this time, HCPS will assign the first device shipment to online school students. We expect the remaining devices to be received and distributed to students in grades 3 - 12 by December 2020.

What do I do if I don’t have high speed internet or reliable internet access?

The Board of Supervisors allocated a limited amount of CARES funding to the purchase of temporary hotspots for students. This funding is limited and may not address the entire need. The devices do not ensure connectivity and we acknowledge that these devices do not work in some areas of the County. Connectivity is available in all high school parking lots and HCPS will continue to expand this service to other schools.

Will students be able to use their own laptops or tablets due to the device delivery delays? What are the minimum requirements for user-owned equipment?

Based upon student device delivery timing, family devices are allowed for a temporary use. HCPS technology will be unable to support non-HCPS devices.

A Windows device should run Windows 10, have current antivirus and malware software, connect to the internet, utilize the Chrome browser and have sufficient video capabilities to support Zoom conferencing.

Other brands of devices should ensure that they can access the internet, utilize the Chrome browser, and meet the minimum requirement for Zoom conferencing.
