South Anna Elementary School (SAES) has been named a Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). SAES is the second elementary school and third overall in Hanover to be recognized as a RAMP school. As of 2018, only 59 Virginia schools have received this honor.

The RAMP designation recognizes schools that are committed to delivering an exemplary comprehensive school counseling program and encourages school counselors nationwide to strive for excellence. Honorees are awarded for aligning their program with criteria outlined in the ASCA national model - a framework for a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling so all students can achieve success.

SAES school counselor Emily Kitching said, “My goal is to foster the academic success, career and college readiness, and social and emotional development of all students. I am grateful for the process of applying to be a Recognized ASCA Model Program because it has allowed me to clearly demonstrate how our school counseling program has positively impacted our students. Above all else, we are there to support students so that they can grow and succeed, and it is an honor to highlight the outstanding efforts of all Hanover County school counselors.”

SAES Principal Alicia Cecil said, “We are honored to be recognized for our outstanding school counseling program. We are very fortunate to have two dedicated and knowledgeable counselors in Mrs. Kitching and Mrs. Balderson who support the academic, social, and emotional development of our students.”

Karla Allen, coordinator of counseling services, praised the effort. “Receiving this recognition for South Anna Elementary School is an affirmation that the school counselors, Emily Kitching and Ami Balderson, are running a comprehensive counseling program that meets the needs of students in the area of academics, careers, and social-emotional needs. I am so proud that they are doing their very best work in serving the South Anna community.”

ASCA will honor SAES at a recognition ceremony during their annual conference in Boston, Massachusetts in July for making an exemplary commitment to comprehensive school counseling programs.
