SCHOOL BOARD GOALS

I. THE BOARD WILL ASSERT ITS ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY AS THE EDUCATIONAL

POLICY LEADER OF PUBLIC EDUCATION IN HANOVER COUNTY.

A. The Board will update, as appropriate, and monitor progress of the school community

2012-2018 long range plan.

B. The Board will develop a legislative agenda for presentation to the County’s

legislative delegation and to the Congressional delegation.

C. The Board will promote the safety and security needs of students and

employees.

D. The Board will engage in activities that promote an emphasis on continuous

quality improvement.

E. The Board will engage in activities which will promote educational equity for all

students.

F. The Board will identify and participate in activities which promote public

engagement, outreach, and accountability.

G. The Board will assure school environments that promote children’s health, well-being,

and ability to learn.

H. The Board will receive training in school board governance and will seek

information on educational programs and issues through attendance at school

board association conferences, seminars, and information-sharing sessions.

II. THE BOARD WILL PROMOTE THE DELIVERY OF EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTIONAL

SERVICES AS THE PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY OF THE ENTIRE SCHOOL

COMMUNITY.

The Board will receive status reports and/or proposals for action on each of the following

instructional-related matters:

Specialty center programming


Advance College Academy

Career and technical education

State and federal accountability standards

Professional development program updates

Pre-school education

Six-year instructional technology plan update

Online instructional delivery

Grading scale

Special education programs


Facilities Committee recommendations

III. THE BOARD WILL DEMONSTRATE LEADERSHIP IN AND SUPPORT EFFORTS TO

ATTRACT AND RETAIN THE BEST QUALIFIED EMPLOYEES.

A. The Board will review plans to compensate and recognize staff performance.

marketplace

continue to evaluate the market competitiveness of all employee salaries

and pay structures and schedule necessary adjustments with particular

emphasis upon effective recruitment strategies where needed

continue to evaluate market competitiveness of fringe benefits programs and

plan enhancements as necessary

monitor 403b/457 retirement program to comply with federal regulations

assure compliance with Federal health care reform legislation

B. The Board will promote the recognition of outstanding employee

accomplishments at Board meetings.

C. The Board will support teacher, principal, and superintendent evaluation

processes to enhance the academic performance of students while assuring

compliance with state and federal requirements.

IV. THE BOARD WILL MONITOR THE EFFECTS OF SIGNIFICANT FISCAL INFLUENCES

AND CONSIDER PLANS FOR THEIR EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT.

A. The Board will review and discuss the implications of current and future

enrollment projections.

B. The Board will ensure optimal use of school facilities.

C. The Board will identify the status of capital projects slated for completion

in 2016-2017.

D. The Board will review proposals to ensure proper levels of staffing necessary to

maintain and enhance current standards of service.

E. The Board will discuss the long-term growth, service, and needs of the district’s

transportation function.

F. The Board will monitor local, state, and federal revenue trends and projections.
