Welcome to the Rural Point Media Center Web Page!

The Media Center serves as the information center for the school by providing a variety of resources for the reading enjoyment, research, and instructional needs of our students and teachers. Library resource provides instruction on use of library materials, literature appreciation, informational research, and technology search skills.  Our Media Center houses over 15,000 materials which can be accessed from the Winnebago on-line catalog through computers in the library and from any classroom computer.

Pre-school and Kindergarten students may check -out 1 book per week. 1st-5th graders may check-out 2 books per week. Additional books may be checked out for special projects.  2nd-5th graders may also check-out 1 magazine each week.  Students must return magazines the morning after their library day.  If students in grades 2-5 finish their books before their next library class, they may return them to the library (preferably in the morning —7:45-8:00) for new books.

Students also have access to the Internet and on-line encyclopedias. To implement their classroom curriculum, teachers have access to a variety of media including videos, laser disks, CD-ROMS, audio tapes, multi-media kits, and math manipulatives, as well as professional books and magazines.

All classes are scheduled for a 40-minute weekly visit to select books and have a lesson are designed to meet the library learning objectives and to utilize topics specific to the SOL’s when possible.  The library program aims to foster an appreciation for libraries, books, and reading, and to ensure that each student acquires the information literacy skills necessary to become a life-long learner.

The Media Center promotes numerous events and programs to encourage reading.  These include author visits and guests readers, National Children’s Book Week, National Library Week, Hanover Reading Month, The Accelerated Reader Program, Virginia Reader's Choice Program, Reading Olympics, The Birthday Book Program, and Book It!
