"Book Buddies Program"

Book Buddies is a community volunteer one-on-one tutorial program that is part of Rural Point’s effort to ensure that all first graders learn to read and write. The program aims to give first graders the help they need in a cost-effective way and sustain community involvement in the education of our children.

Community volunteers who serve as tutors are trained at the onset of the program by using video demonstration lessons of actual tutorial sessions. The tutors then use lesson plans and material prepared by the school’s Reading Resource Teacher, Lori Spiller, to instruct children in one-on-one tutorials 45-60 minutes, twice weekly. These tutoring sessions usually occur during a time of day when the children are not receiving direct instruction in math, reading, or other content areas.

Rural Point appreciates the volunteers who have given their time and energy to serve as tutors in the Book Buddies Program.

"Reading Olympics"

Reading Olympics is a program designed to promote reading, teamwork, self-confidence, and fun!  Teams of 4th and 5th graders volunteer to read about 42 books over the course of a year.  The books range in reading ability from 3rd to 6th grade and cover topics such as sports, mysteries, historical fiction, adventures, biographies, dramas, and more.  In the spring, all teams gather for the Olympics competition.  teams are asked questions about the books.  Correct answers are awarded with points that add up to gold, silver, bronze and honorable mention medals.  The medals are awarded at the Olympics medal ceremony with teams, parents, and special guests present.  All participants receive a medal for their hard work and dedication to reading!  If you have any questions or want more information, please contact Kara Ednie, Rural Point Media Specialist, or Lori Spiller, Rural Point Reading Resource Teacher.
