Reading Resource
Kim Mays, Reading Resource Teacher

Mrs. Mays, Pole Green Elementary Reading Specialist, works with students, teachers, and parents to improve students’ reading achievement.  She works primarily with small groups of first, second, and third graders to provide additional instruction to struggling readers.  During guided reading groups, Mrs. Mays has students read texts at their instructional levels and works to improve students’ fluency, comprehension, writing, and word study skills.

Mrs. Mays is also in charge of two volunteer reading programs at our school.  Mrs. Mays organizes schedules, finds volunteers, and writes lesson plans for Book Buddies and Kinder-Buddies. Book Buddies is a one on one tutoring program for first grade students.  Kinder-Buddies is a small group tutoring program for kindergarten students.  Volunteers include the local firemen, parent helpers, and resource teachers here at Pole Green.

As a consultant to teachers, Mrs. Mays works to help teachers implement reading programs in their classrooms.  In addition, she plans training sessions to provide information on reading topics for the Pole Green staff.  She is also available to meet with parents to provide activities and suggestions for best reading practices at home.  Please click on the links below for strategies to use when working the emergent, beginner, and instructional reader.
