 Special Education Services

  Types of Services

Pearsonís Corner Elementary School serves a variety of children identified with special needs in a variety of ways.  There is a continuum of services available for children identified with learning disabilities, developmental delays, autism, emotional disabilities, other health impairments, mental retardation, multiple disabilities, speech/language delays, vision impairments, as well as fine and gross motor delays.

Referral for evaluation

All children, aged 2-21, inclusive, whether enrolled in public school or not, who are suspected of having a disability, may be referred to the special education administrator who initiates the process of determining eligibility for special education and related services.  Referrals may be made by any source, including a child study committee, school staff, a parent or parents, or other individuals.

Upon receipt of the referral, the special education administrator may request that a child study committee review and determine whether an evaluation will be completed.  The committee shall include parents, classroom teacher, special education teacher, administrator, and other qualified professionals as appropriate.  If the decision to evaluate is made and permission is obtained from the parents, all evaluations are to be completed within 65 business days and then discussed at an eligibility meeting.

Individualized Education Plan (IEP)

If found eligible for special education services, an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) will be developed within 30 calendar days of the eligibility meeting.  This plan will be accessible to each regular education teacher, special education teacher, related service provider, and other service providers who are responsible for the IEPís implementation.  Teachers and providers will be informed of specific responsibilities related to implementing the IEP and the specific accommodations, modifications, and supports that must be provided for the child in accordance with the IEP.  Progress reporting will be done on a regular basis and the IEP will be reviewed/revised at least yearly.

If you have specific questions regarding types of services offered at Pearsonís Corner Elementary or the referral process, please contact Veronica Pitts, assistant principal and special education administrator at 723-3660.
