Doris Favale, Reading Specialist
Mrs. Favale works with students, teachers, and families to help students achieve literacy goals and discover the joy of reading and writing. In addition to working with students in small groups and one-on-one, Mrs. Favale collaborates with teachers and provides resources and ongoing professional development to support and enrich literacy instruction in the classroom.
Some of the literacy programs offered at Pearson’s Corner Elementary are as follows:
Students who are eligible for ELL services are
supported in language development and academic achievement. Students
participate in supplementary lessons that incorporate listening,
speaking, reading, and writing. Content specific instruction is
frequently integrated in ELL lessons.
Supplementary reading instruction is offered by Mrs. Favale and our part-time reading interventionists to students who would benefit from additional support in reading in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. The goal of the LLI program (published by Fountas and Pinnell) is to lift the literacy achievement of students who are not achieving grade-level expectations in reading. During LLI lessons, student read new and familiar texts, work with words, and participate in writing activities.
Paws to R.E.A.D. volunteer therapy dogs and owner/handlers are scheduled to visit PCES to provide one-on-one reading sessions to developing readers. The nonjudgmental nature of the dogs decreases the stress of the reading process and allows the children to enjoy reading and improve their reading skills. Typically, second and third graders participate in the Paws to READ program and are selected based on reading assessment data and teacher recommendations.
The mission of the Paws to R.E.A.D. program is:
To improve and enrich the literacy skills of children through the individual assistance of registered Reading Education Assistance Dogs® and handlers (R.E.A.D.® teams) as literacy mentors.
Paws to READ at PCES was featured on Channel 8 (WRIC) in May of 2017.
The SOL tutorial program provides additional
instruction and practice in the areas of reading and math to
eligible students. Test taking strategies are also addressed during
tutorial sessions. Students are recommended for the tutorial program
based on assessment data and teacher recommendations.
