The goal of the language arts program at Laurel Meadow Elementary School is to engage each and every student in learning to read, write and communicate effectively.  We do this by way of the Standards of Learning as prescribed by the Virginia Department of Educations and the Hanover County expectations.  We strive to teach all of our students to become fluent readers and comprehend a variety of both fiction and non-fiction text.  As students progress in their ability to make meaning of more complex text we help them to refine strategies for comprehending and analyzing a variety of genres.

Mrs. Oates and Mrs. Coakley work with students, teachers and parents to improve student reading achievement.  They both work alongside teachers as a coach to help provide support to provide best literacy instruction for all students. Mrs. Oates and Mrs. Coakley provide intervention to students who struggle in literacy using a “pull out” reading intervention approach as well.

The Core reading Specialists at LMES have a variety of additional responsibilities that focus on providing additional assistance to at-risk readers. These programs include: direct instruction with selected students, diagnostic testing, placement testing, assisting classroom teachers, consulting with parents, providing supplemental materials, and staff development at both school and district levels.

Creating a high quality book room is a big focus for the Core Reading Specialist at LMES. The book room will have sets of texts from a variety of genres that children read during Guided Reading instruction. Books are leveled according to difficulty and include many fiction and non-fiction titles. Non-fiction books have been chosen to enrich the science, social studies, and math topics studied at each grade level. During Guided Reading, teachers work with small groups of students who are reading similar levels of text and display similar reading behaviors. This allows teachers to provide differentiated instruction and carefully monitor students' progress.
