Shannon O’Connor, a school nurse at Chickahominy Middle School (CMS), has been selected as the 2018 Support Employee of the Year. She is the first school nurse to earn this recognition. O’Connor has been employed with Hanover County Public Schools since 2011 and the school nurse at CMS since 2013.

Support Employee of the YearO’Connor said, “As a school nurse, it’s a privilege to go to work every day and have an opportunity to make a difference in students’ lives. I feel like this is a recognition for all Hanover school nurses. It means a lot to me that people went out of their way to recognize my contributions as a nurse because it not only recognizes me personally, but also shines a light on what so many school nurses deal with and contribute on a daily basis.”

“I am very pleased with the announcement of Shannon O’Connor as HCPS’ Support Employee of the year. Shannon is an exemplary school nurse who goes above and beyond to care for her students and school community. She is very passionate about her role and responsibilities at CMS. She is very deserving of this honor,” said Terry Woody, Health Services Coordinator.

Mark Beckett, CMS Principal, said, “Mrs. O’Connor’s greatest strength is her compassion as an advocate for the entire well-being of our students. Besides the physical well-being, she tends to the social, emotional, and mental well-being of our middle-schoolers. She is the first, at times, to recognize the characteristics of anxiety in students. She also is the first that many students seek out to celebrate their good days and help cope with their not so great days. She’s a dynamo of many talents. She’s been known to remove a stain from a student’s blouse on picture day, to help you find your long-lost coat, know the trick to remove gum from your hair (and save your hair) and at the same time know how to help ease your anxiety before a test or after a tough day. She exemplifies what it means to be a Charger. She is kind, compassionate, flexible, and a skilled multi-tasker with a sharp sense of humor.”

Support Employee of the YearThe school division employs over 1,000 support employees in order to accomplish its mission. Each year, one employee wins this distinguished award. It is given to an employee who exhibits several qualities, such as: provides unique and exceptional contributions to the school division; demonstrates commitment through quality job performance and a positive attitude; demonstrates leadership; seeks to enhance their skills and knowledge; and, fosters cooperation and positive relationships with colleagues, students, teachers, administrators, and the school community.
