Catherine Ciucci, an English teacher at Chickahominy Middle School, has been selected as the beginning teacher of the year.

Ciucci has been employed with Hanover County Public Schools since August of 2018. She received her bachelor’s degree from Longwood University. Ciucci is also a Hanover County Public Schools graduate.

Ciucci said, “I am incredibly humbled and honored to receive this award. I can confidently say that this was not a solo effort. I would like to thank my family and friends for supporting me, my mentors for guiding me, and my administrators for believing in me. I would also like to thank my colleagues and students who inspire me every day. Finally, I would like to thank Hanover County Public Schools for the privilege of this opportunity. This first year has been one of the best years of my life. I always knew teaching was my dream job, but in all of my years of dreaming, I never could have imagined loving anything so much.”

Dr. Michael Gill, Superintendent of Schools; Catherine Ciucci, Hanover County Public Schools Beginning Teacher of the Year; Robert L. Hundley, Jr., Hanover County School Board Chairman (Chickahominy District); Mark Beckett, Chickahominy Middle School Principal“The most distinguishing and outstanding quality that Catherine demonstrates is the ability to makes us all better. As a first-year teacher, she surpasses the definition of a novice and inexperienced educator. She performs like a seasoned and skilled veteran-teacher which forces others around her to raise their level and expectations. Her classroom runs like a fine-tuned machine that benefits all students. She openly asks for guidance and problem-solving help when she needs it, and she intuitively understands the best part of being a teacher is learning from other teachers. She is welcoming and upbeat every day. It is her passion for learning, compassion for reaching the whole child, contagious level of positive energy, and free spirit towards her students and colleagues that defines her as an educator. She had made us all shine a little brighter this year and hopefully for many more years to come,” said Mark Beckett, Chickahominy Middle School principal.

Each year, the division selects one new teacher for this distinguished award who exhibits several qualities such as being inspirational, poised, articulate, and knowledgeable; exceptionally skilled and dedicated; respected and admired by students, parents, and colleagues; and actively and meaningfully involved in their school and community.
