Chromebooks

Dear Families,

We are thrilled to share with you an exciting development in our ability to provide the necessary technology for all of our students to learn in the digital world.

Hanover County Public Schools has received a shipment of more than 9,000 Chromebooks that we will begin distributing next week. This accomplishment, paid for through CARES Act and local funding approved by the Hanover County School Board and Board of Supervisors, means every HCPS middle and high school student will have a Chromebook by Thanksgiving break. Elementary school students will receive their device in December.

As outlined in our Five-Year Technology Plan, our technology department will distribute the devices, starting next week, to middle school students first. This will be followed by distribution to high school students and elementary school students.

School principals will communicate more details on distribution soon.

The receipt of these devices, at a time when there is a national shortage of Chromebooks, is a significant advancement for our school division and our ability to serve the ever-changing needs of our students and families. We pride ourselves on our Tradition of Excellence, which entails providing a top quality education to students. Now more than ever, this technology is a necessary tool for our students’ toolbox — keeping them connected to learning outside the classroom, no matter the circumstances.

Without question, technology will never replace our great teachers. However, when used effectively, it has the ability to transform instruction in a way not previously possible. It empowers teachers and students alike to create and participate in new lessons that were previously unimaginable and better prepares students for the world in which they will live and work.

Again, our principals will communicate more specific details on distribution soon, so please be on the lookout for this information. This news, however, is cause for celebration, and we wanted to be sure to share it with you as soon as possible.

With gratitude,

Dr. Michael Gill, Superintendent of Schools

Terri Hechler, Director of Technology Services
