Elmont's library actively supports the computer software program known as Accelerated Reader.  Students read specific books and then complete a computerized multiple choice test.  Points are awarded on the basis of percentage of questions correct.  To allow students easy access to Accelerated Reader titles, books have special spine labels which indicate the point value and reading level.

Students are recognized for outstanding achievement in Accelerated Reader. Elmont's Accelerated Reader Committee establishes goals for each grade level.  When a student reaches a goal his/her name is placed on the bulletin board in the school cafeteria.  At the end of the first and second semesters, special events are held which recognize students at point levels designated as mid-year or goal 4.

The Elmont library is open from 7:30 a.m. until 3:00 daily.  Students in grades 2, 3, 4 or 5 accompanied by parents may take tests in the library from 7:30-7:45 and from 2:30-2:45.  Testing cannot be done in the library on Thursdays due to staff meetings, and occasionally other meetings cause additional library closures in the afternoons.
