Students in kindergarten through fifth grade have physical education resource class once a week for 45 minutes.  The program has been designed to emphasize:  movement, skill and wellness concepts.  These learning experiences are directed toward helping each student develop an enjoyment of leisure-time activities and physical fitness.

The design of the curriculum includes, but is not limited to:

        Kindergarten through second grade will be involved in activities that will develop basic locomotor and nonlocomotor movements, cooperative play, physical fitness perceptual motor skills and lead-up games.

        Third through fifth grade will be involved in orientation to fitness testing, low organization games/ relays, lead-up games/sports, physical fitness, gymnastics and fitness testing.

Other components of the program include:

  • Kite Flying will be held during the month of March, third, fourth and fifth grade students will participate in this activity.
  • Jump Rope for Heart is a fundraising event held in February to help the American Heart Association fight heart disease.  Second, third, fourth and fifth grade students participate is this activity.
  • Field Day is held in June, all grades participate in this event.
  • Fitness Testing is conducted in September and again in May.  Third, fourth and fifth grade students are tested in five areas of fitness.  4th and 5th grade students are eligible for the Presidential Physical Fitness Award.
  • Walk-Jog-Run Club is a running club which meets after school once a week in the fall and spring for students in third, fourth, and fifth grade.  Participants track their progress and receive rewards for the completion of laps.
  • Fit for Life is a youth running program sponsored by the Sports Backers organization in Richmond that encourages students to stay fit and exercise through running. Students may voluntarily participate and log their miles to complete a "marathon" in both the Fall and the Spring. Students finish their last mile in style in downtown Richmond.
