Dr. Michael Gill, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, has been named the 2019 Region I Superintendent of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS).

“We are proud to have Dr. Gill represent Region I as our Superintendent of the Year. He is most deserving of this recognition due to his leadership in the region, as well as the innovative instructional initiatives that he has led in Hanover County, such as the Classrooms of the Future. The programs implemented by Hanover County Public Schools serve as a model for other school systems in the region and throughout the state.” said Dr. Eric L. Jones, superintendent of Powhatan Public Schools and Region I chair.

Region I is comprised of fifteen school divisions. There are eight regions designated by the Virginia Department of Education throughout the commonwealth.

Each year, every region selects one superintendent to advance and compete for the VASS Virginia Superintendent of the Year award. The state winner advances to compete for the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) National Superintendent of the Year.

“I am humbled and honored to receive this unexpected recognition from my Region I colleagues for whom I have great respect and admiration. I am grateful to serve in Hanover County and work alongside so many dedicated professionals who truly put the best interest of our students at the heart of every decision. I am equally appreciative of the strong and sustained support of our community that recognizes the importance of a strong public education system.” said Dr. Michael Gill, superintendent.

“The Hanover County School Board congratulates Dr. Gill on his recognition as the Region I Superintendent of the Year. We are extremely grateful for his dedication to our students, teachers, staff, administrators, and the larger Hanover community. His focus on equity, relevance, and innovation acts as a foundation for all of our decisions. We are excited and proud to have him represent Hanover County and Region I, and we wish him the very best at the state-level competition,” said Robert L. Hundley, Jr., Hanover County School Board chair.

Dr. Gill has served as the superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools since December 2015. Starting in 1997 as a social studies teacher, Dr. Gill has served in a variety of roles throughout his career as an educator, including assistant superintendent of instructional leadership and chief academic officer, director of middle school education, executive principal for career and technical education, principal, assistant principal, dean of students, and department chair.
