The Virginia School Counseling Association (VSCA) has named Karen Cole, director of school counseling at Lee-Davis High School (L-DHS), as its 2019 secondary school counselor of the year.

The award recognizes two outstanding professionals (elementary and secondary) who have implemented the American School Counseling Association national model with evidence of data-driven practices and a comprehensive counseling program. In addition, award winners must have made a positive impact on students, teachers, and parents by innovations in counseling and leadership in the counseling office, school, and community.

Cole is in her 34th year in education and 5th year at L-DHS. She began her career in education as a teacher in Orange County Public Schools. Cole said, “I am honored and grateful to be named VSCA secondary school counselor of the year. School counselors roles and services have changed immensely since the beginning of my career, but the lifeblood of the profession - students, families, and the incredible counseling teams I have been a part of - have always nourished my professional joy and fulfillment. I am proud to be one of the many committed Virginia school counselors who plays a vital role in fostering student safety and meeting the academic, career, and social/emotional needs of students across the commonwealth.”

Karla Allen, coordinator of counseling services, said, “Under Karen’s strong and supportive leadership, she has elevated her department to a proactive, comprehensive counseling program to ensure that the needs of all students are being met. I couldn’t be more proud of her hard work and dedication to her school and school counseling in Hanover County.”

L-DHS Principal Charles Stevens said, “Karen’s leadership, her positive mental attitude, and her dedication to educating the whole child are reflected in the outstanding quality of service our entire school counseling department provides students, parents/guardians, and staff. I am so excited for her on this well-deserved honor.”

The VSCA will recognize Cole at an awards ceremony in October during their annual conference in Hampton, Virginia.
