Welcome!

Welcome to our art department at Cold Harbor Elementary School.  The art room at Cold Harbor is a wonderful place for students, preschool through grade five, to be creative while they learn.  Students come to art classes once a week and receive instruction in art production, art history, art criticism, and aesthetics.  Students' lessons are designed to build one upon the other in a consistent and cumulative manner within each grade level as well as one grade level to the next.

The art program at Cold Harbor also contributes these strong educational benefits to all students:

Art Across the Curriculum reinforces and brings to life what students learn in other subjects through a unique and cooperative effort between the art teacher and classroom teachers.  Specifically, children are encouraged to create, read, write, and talk about art as they discover the value of the visual arts and their relationship to classroom subjects;

sdi_rd.gif (96 bytes) develops students' creative problem-solving and critical thinking abilities by looking, touching, and talking about their surroundings and experiences;
sdi_rd.gif (96 bytes)allows children to explore their world
through visual symbols and express ideas through creative images.  They not only develop basic art skills, they also learn a special vocabulary and interpret the meaning of works of art.

Throughout the school year, the art department is involved with many special programs that bring family, school and community together.  Student artwork is always on display throughout the hallways at Cold Harbor.  Parent volunteer help on a regular basis with school displays and matting artwork for exhibits.  Occasionally, there are family art nights to celebrate Youth Art Month.

Other opportunities for the display of artwork include:  the Hanover County School Board Office Exhibit, the Hanover Arts and Science Festival, and art exhibits at local businesses.

It is the desire of Cold Harbor Elementary to provide a program that encourages creative thinking, a willingness to experiment and an appreciation for artistic ventures throughout life.

Thank you for your continued support of the arts at Cold Harbor.
