 Fifth Grade

Reading and Language Arts

Reading instruction centers around Guided Reading Groups, which use leveled texts. Through both fiction and nonfiction texts, students focus on comprehension skills such as paraphrasing, summarizing, identifying cause and effect, identifying fact and opinion, making inferences, drawing conclusions, sequencing events, and using context clues. Teacher may also the Hanover County adopted Harcourt Reading Series to reinforce comprehension skills. Students will read a variety of novels and participate in Literature Circles, Socratic Seminars, and Book Talks to further develop fluency and comprehension.

Teachers assess all students' reading levels at the beginning and end of the year using the Hanover County adopted Fountas-Pinnell Guided Reading assessment system. These tests are used to determine reading level and assist teachers in grouping students for reading.

Writing

Students will participate in Writer's Workshop, where they receive instruction based on the 6+1 Writing Model. This model focuses on the concepts of ideas, content, word choice, fluency, voice, organization and conventions.

 

 

Math

Instruction will be delivered following the Hanover County pacing guide and using the Hanover County adopted Pearson enVision Math text series. Students will be exposed to number talks and performance tasks, which encourage students to use a variety of problem-solving strategies. Mastery and memorization of multiplication facts is imperative for success in the 5th grade curriculum.

Math 5 Units include:
* Rounding Decimals
* Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers and Decimals
* Multiplying and Dividing Whole Numbers and Decimals
* Graphing and Statistics
* Algebra and Patterns
* Simplifying Numeric Expressions
* Geometry: Angles, Triangles and Quadrilaterals
* Faction and Decimal Number Sense
* Fraction Computation (Addition and Subtraction of Fractions and Mixed Numbers with Regrouping)
* Measurement: Perimeter, Area, Volume, Circles, Units of Measurement (customary and metric), and Time
*Probability

Unit Study

Students will rotate to each 5th grade teacher for approximately 6 weeks to study each unit. During this time, 4th grade science will be reviewed in preparation for SOL testing in the spring.

Science Units include:
* 4th grade science review
* Animals, Plants and Cells
* Oceanography
* Light and Sound
* Matter and Scientific Process
* Earth Science, Magnets and Electricity


Social Studies units include:
* Map Skills: Latitude, Longitude, Hemispheres, Continents and Regions of the United States as they apply to World and US History
 

Assessments, SOL Testing, and Benchmark Testing

Students will take Math Benchmark tests at the end of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd nine weeks marking periods. Reading Benchmark tests will be administered at the end of the 2nd and 3rd nine weeks marking periods. A Writing Benchmark test will be given in early March, to include both a direct writing and multiple choice component.  

Students will take SOL Tests in Math, Reading and Science. The Math and REading SOL Tests will be broken into two sessions, to be taken over a two-day period. The Science SOL Test covers all 4th and 5th grade science units and is given in one session. Students in Compacted Math will take a Computer Adaptive Test in one test session.  
 

Special Activities

Field Trips will be announced and finalized throughout the year. Traditionally 5th grade travels to Washington D.C. in the fall and the Virginia Beach Aquarium in the spring, and to the MSiC are taken for lessons related to Math and Science. In addition, 5th grade hosts a celebratory picnic to Dorey Park and a Promotion/Awards ceremony in June.
The opportunity to participate in the DARE program and 5th grade musical are made available to students as well.
