Welcome to the Beaverdam Elementary School Website! It is my hope that you find the information included to be helpful to you. I am so excited to begin my sixth year at Beaverdam. This is such a special community and it is a pleasure serving as your principal! Our theme this year is, "Camp Leadership Exploring the Paths to Leading and Learning." We hope that our "Camp" experience will help all our students to find the leader in themselves.

Our unique EDGE (Early-childhood Developmentally Guided Education) program provides each child the opportunity for continuous instruction from the same teacher for two years.  Teachers "loop" from either grades kindergarten to first, second to third, or fourth to fifth. This provides additional instructional time by reducing the amount of time typically needed for getting acquainted and wrapping up the year.  It also provides consistency from year to year as well as a strong feeling of classroom community.

This year, we will continue our momentum for growing leaders at Beaverdam through our Leader in Me initiative. Our staff is dedicated to teaching the principles of leadership through Stephen Covey's 7  Habits of Highly Effective People. Our staff has been trained in incorporating these skills and this specific language into every aspect of the learning process. These skills have been proven to increase achievement, decrease discipline issues, and increase engagement among students, parents, and teachers.  By deepening our students' understanding of what it means to be a leader, we will foster the confidence necessary for them to thrive in the 21st century. In this fourth year of implementing The Leader in Me, we will continue to focus on empowering students with leadership opportunities while helping them to set their goals and chart their progress. We will also be setting school wide, classroom, and individual goals to help take each child and, in turn, our school to the next level of achievement!

It is our desire as educators to prepare our students for long term success in the classroom and in life! As we incorporate the teaching of leadership skills into our rigorous academic curriculum, we hope you join us in encouraging our vision of "Learning to Lead and Leading to Learn!"

Welcome to Beaverdam Elementary School!  I am very excited about the 2017-2018 school year where “Learning is an Adventure of a Lifetime!”  I look forward to working with all of our students, parents, and community members throughout the year.

I am super excited to start my first full year as Assistant Principal at BES and my 16th year in education! I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2002, and then received my Master’s from the University of Virginia. I began career teaching third grade in Richmond City Public Schools for four years and then moved to South Anna Elementary School after marrying my husband. I taught both fourth and fifth grade at South Anna for eleven years. Outside of school, I enjoy reading, walking, and spending time with my husband, children, family, and friends.

As we embark on the new school year, I look forward to working with all our students and family members. My goal this year is to continue to build relationships with all of our BES families in order to create a positive learning environment. Please feel free to contact me at any time during the school year. Working together as a team, we are helping to mold lifelong learners, and productive members of our society!

Sincerely,
Michelle Whaley
Assistant Principal
